The NFL tournaments, competition and contest are speech art competitions that are organized for students in high school. This organization is a non profit and non partisan youth league. The main purpose of the National Forensic League is to encourage and motivate secondary school pupils in speech art. It offers college scholarships as motivation to winners in the speech art competitions. The NFL boasts of a membership base that is of over one million members in the whole world. All members of the league should abide and honor the National Forensic League code of honor that consists of five tenets. Service, leadership, humility integrity and respect are the five tenets. Students who are enrolled in both private and public high schools can enroll as members on approval by their principal; they also need to pay all the associated fees.
Students can earn points each time they participate in speech contest, student congress, community speaking and interscholastic debate. National Forensic League also grants degrees that are based on points that an individual student earns. The points can also determine how many students a given secondary school can field at the NFL tournaments or competitions in the years presiding.
Some of the degrees awarded by the NFL include; Degree of merit which is secured on attaining twenty five points; Degree of honor which is awarded if a participant attains seventy five points; Degree of excellence which is awarded on attaining one hundred and fifty points; The degree of distinction which is awarded on attaining two hundred and fifty points; Special distinction degree awarded on attaining five hundred points and the outstanding distinction degree which is awarded on attaining one thousand points.
National Forensic League seeks to empower young people in High schools to be ethical individuals, effective communicators, critical thinkers and leaders in a democratic society. These values are encrypted in the Leagues mission statement. The league is keen on increasing public awareness on the value speech, debate and communication. This it does by organizing nation wide contests and competitions.
Students who win these contests are entitled to over 0,000 in college scholarship as prize money. This acts a as a motivation tool to participating pupils. The organization boast of both lifelong members and high school members, only secondary school students can participate in the competitions.
The national speech tournament has been held continuously since nineteen thirty one. It only failed to organize the tournaments during the Second World War period that is between nineteen thirty nine and nineteen forty five. Participants in these contests compete in story telling, policy debate, value debate, original oratory, prose reading, poetry reading and public forums among other contests.
The NFL tournaments are carried out at district, state and national levels. Points acquired at the district or state level catapult participants to the national contest. Apart from the points acquired during contest, members can also garner in service points. Example, if a contestant was to deliver a speech to twenty five or more adults, he would accrue twenty five service points.
